Michigan Launches New Online Portal for Youth Employment Permits

Share

Key Takeaways

  • Michigan has launched a new digital portal for youth employment permits.
  • Employers must register and use the portal to hire minor employees.
  • The new system can help streamline seasonal hiring and compliance.

For Michigan employers gearing up for seasonal hiring, obtaining work permits for minor employees just became much easier. The State of Michigan recently launched a new digital solution designed to streamline the youth employment permit process and reduce administrative burden for both employers and young workers.

The new Youth Employment Permit Portal (YEPP) modernizes a process that has traditionally involved multiple parties and paper-based documentation. By centralizing permit management, Michigan is making it easier for employers to onboard younger workers while helping ensure compliance with state youth employment requirements.

New Process for Hiring Employees Under 18

The YEPP is a centralized online system that replaces the previous process, which required permits to be obtained through local school districts or nonpublic schools. The launch timing is especially helpful for employers preparing to hire additional staff during the holiday season, when many businesses turn to student workers to meet increased demand.

Steps to Leverage the Portal

Employers planning to hire individuals under the age of 18 must first register with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO).

To access the portal:

  • Create an account through MiLogin.
  • If you already have a MiLogin account, search for YEPP and add it to your available applications.
  • Use the portal to manage youth employment permits and employment records.

In addition to processing permits, employers using YEPP are required to notify LEO through the portal when a minor’s employment ends.

Youth workers will also use the portal as part of the permit application process. Employers hiring younger workers may want to familiarize applicants and new hires with the system and direct them to Michigan’s Youth Employment resources for guidance on completing the necessary steps.

As seasonal hiring ramps up, employers should take time to establish their YEPP access and familiarize HR and payroll teams with the new process before bringing on minor employees.
