Michigan Requires New Poster for Veterans Services

Governor Whitmer has enacted a new law aimed at simplifying access to benefits and services for Michigan veterans. This legislation mandates that employers prominently display workplace posters containing vital information about veteran benefits and services available within the state.

As of 2023, Michigan was home to over 441,000 veterans. Advocates for the bill emphasize that many veterans face challenges transitioning from military to civilian life, often struggling to locate the resources and support they need. The new law seeks to bridge this gap by ensuring that employers provide accessible information to assist veterans in navigating these services.

Employer Obligations

Effective April 2, 2025, all businesses employing one or more individuals will be required to display a poster in a conspicuous location accessible to employees. This poster must include, but is not limited to, information on the following services available to veterans:

  • Contact details for the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
  • Mental health and substance abuse support.
  • Educational, workforce and job training resources.
  • Tax benefits.
  • Guidance on obtaining a veteran designation on a driver’s license or state ID.
  • Information on unemployment benefit eligibility.
  • Legal assistance.
  • Contact details for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans Crisis Line.

The posters are available in a downloadable format on the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) website.

Posting Your Labor Law Posters

Ensure compliance by prominently displaying applicable labor law notices for easy employee visibility and access. Often, the best place to post labor law posters is in the breakroom or another common area. Depending on the size of the facility and workforce, this may mean a company must display posters in multiple areas. In cases where employers work with a large remote workforce, employers can share the documents digitally, so long as they notify employees if the law changes by email and send a copy of, or share a link to, the updated poster.
